Hossam Haick (TECH), Ernesto Joselevich (WIS)

Joint winners of this year’s

IVS Excellence Award for Research

Hossam Haick (TECH)

Prof. Hossam Haick is a Full Professor at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology and head of five major European consortia. Highly multi-disciplinary in nature, the research of Prof. Haick focuses on novel solid-state and flexible devices/sensors as well as electronic sensory nanoarrays non-invasive diagnosis of diseases via volatile biomarkers. Prof. Haick’s comprehensive approach comprises materials and device development, system integration, testing in lab and clinical environments and exploitation of project results/hardware. Prof. Haick has received more than 72 prizes and recognitions, including the Knight of the Order of Academic Palms (conferred by the French Government), the Humboldt Senior Research Award, the “Michael Bruno” Prize, the Changjiang Award, etc.

 Ernesto Joselevich (WIS)

Prof. Ernesto Joselevich is a member of the Department of Materials and Interfaces of the Weizmann Institute of Science. His research focuses on the organization of nanomaterials, including nanotubes and nanowires, their integration into functional nanosystems, and their characterization by mechanical, electrical and optical measurements at the nanometer scale. Prof. Joselevich pioneered the 'guided growth' approach for the generation of ordered nanotubes and nanowires directed by surfaces. His group is also leading the field of nanotube torsion, namely, how different nanotubes twist and how the could be used for a variety of sensors, such as miniature gyroscopes to guided tiny autonomous flying vehicles. He has received numerous awards and fellowships, including the Israel Chemical Society (ICS) Excellent Young Scientist Prize (2007), ICS Tenne Prize for Nanoscale Sciences (2016), and Israel Vacuum Society (IVS) Excellence Award for Research (2020). In 2014 he received a European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant. He has filed 5 patents and has published more than 80 papers in prestigious journals, 7 of them in Science, Nature, and Nature group journals, with over 9,000 citations (h-index 37). Prof. Joselevich is a devoted father of four. He likes giving popular scientific lectures and experiments to children of all ages from 1 to 99. He likes traveling and meeting people all over the world. He speaks several languages, including Spanish, Hebrew, English, French, Catalan, Portuguese and a bit of Arabic.
